Obiettivi formativi

Main goals are to know, recognize and manage the following processes:

  • Adaptation and change processes within Military organizations, with reference to Asymmetric Conflicts and Counterinsurgency:
    • Cultural diversity in Crises Response Operations
    • Gender relations in the Military
  • Family dynamics and military families 
  • Authority, power and leadership in military organisations. The various
    leadership styles; leadership and diversity of leaderships styles according
    to different cultures

These subjects are particularly relevant for military organisation, in WAR as well as in CRO-Crises Response Operations contexts and to understand armed forces and society relationships.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

  1. Knowledge and understanding. To know the most important changes that has taken place in the Military Organization. To know the difference between power and authority, the different leadership styles and how they change in the different cultures.
  2. Capacity to apply knowledge and understanding. Ability to apply the social tools of organizations study to Military Organization. Ability to change the leadership style in the
    different situations and cultures.
  3. Ability in making judgments. The course aims to develop a critic approach to the analysis of the Military organization and the leadership stimulating the comparison among different analytical perspectives.
  4. Communication abilities. Abilities to give correct descriptions of social phenomenon and processes concerning the Military Organizations and the leadership.
  5. Learning abilities. Ability to develop useful sociological knowledge about organizations and leadership.

Scientific materials to study are provided by the Teacher on SUISS Moodle Course website, in form of papers, articles and essays, and slides for each subject.

Modalità di insegnamento

Lectures are given in presence. Lessons are organised in topics according to the programme (see above), presented also with the support of detailed slides giving evidence to main pillars, concepts and definitions. The typical lecture is 45 minutes long, followed by a 5 minutes brek. According to the current organisation, three hours per week are given.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Mid-term written exam with multiple choice questions and one open
question, on the first half of the program.
Final written exam on the second half, of the program, with multiple
choice questions and one open question.
For all subsequent exam dates, exams are written with open questions on
the whole program.
